With less than a week left for Avengers: Infinity War to hit theaters, let’s take a look at the best lines by Marvel superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, etc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The iconic lines have not only given us the joy of watching a superhero get his or her moment to shine but also helped us to better understand the nuances of their character.
Iconic dialogues in a film elevate our overall movie going experience as much as a good story, visual effects and impeccable performances. Think about it, what is the first thing you recall when you think of the iconic hindi film Sholay? It’s the dialogues, right? Same goes for the iconic Hollywood films, be it Darth Vader in Empire Strikes Back telling Luke Skywalker – “Luke, I’m your father”, or Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “I’ll be back” in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, a memorable dialogue stays with us forever.
Such as been the case with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its 18 films to have released so far. Right from the first film from this franchise, Iron Man (2008) we have been overloaded with memorable lines. When Tony Stark said, “I am Iron Man” at the end of the first film we had an unparalleled glee. Now, 17 films later, when T’challa says, “In times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers,” we are inspired, not only because the line sounds really cool, but also because in retrospect, it has such deep meaning, especially relevant in the our real-world scenario in present times.
Let’s take a look at 10 such memorable lines from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we never forgot:
“I can do this all day"
Who doesn’t love an underdog with a lot of heart? In the iconic scene from Captain America: The first Avenger, we see a malnourished Steve Rogers getting the chocolate knocked out of him by a thug, who is clearly twice his size, but the future Captain America doesn’t back down from an honest fight. It may be a simple dialogue, but in that moment you truly understand the dynamics, motivation and overall personality of this character. In six words, the writers summarized Captain America for you to understand.
“Puny God”
Arguably the most iconic scene from the first team-up film, The Avengers (2012), is when Loki we see the Hulk beat down on Loki. We all got the best chuckle after Loki says: “Enough! You are all beneath me, I’m a God and I will not be bullied by...” and the Hulk smashes him repeatedly on the floor saying: “Puny God!” It was the best of a pay-off scene because prior to that in the film Loki had been beating the Avengers at every step of the way. Also, we get to truly understand in that one scene exactly how powerful the Hulk is.
“Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I’m here to pick up a fossil.”
Though, there were many other iconic lines in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), but in the scene where Black Widow asks Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers, “Either one of you know where the Smithsonian is? I’m here to pick up a fossil”, you not just get a chuckle, but also understand the character dynamics and a sense of the relationship between Rogers and Natasha Romanov.
“The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow.”
You laugh at the absurdness of this line but at the same time feel pain for Hawkeye, who is trying to make sense of a situation that he probably never thought could happen to him even in wildest of dreams. “The city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense.” It is in this moment you understand Hawkeye’s helplessness but appreciate his effort never the less. Though the expert archer with a slew of tech-heavy at his disposal is second to none, but you get that he is bound to feel overshadowed fighting besides gods with superpowers and magical weapons.
“Every time someone tries to end a war before it starts, innocent people die.”
The is the scene from Avengers: Age of Ultron that was not only a tease for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, but also explained to you about the mindset of Iron Man and Captain America., their allegiance and a glimpse at the wrecking relationship. Effects of which you will also see in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
“Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it.”
While there were many memorable dialogues in the first Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), but this dialogue by “Drax the Destroyer” was simply gold, especially when you see it in the context it was said. It also gave the audience an insight into the character and his kind and how they were different from humans, who often tend to say one thing and mean the other.”
“Underoos”
Over the years, Iron Man has had many iconic lines in his kitty. He is the one who started it all and continues to be one of the most important characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this specific line has a special significance in the MCU. It marked the arrival of arguably the most popular Marvel superhero character – Spiderman.
“We are Groot”
This was such an endearing line by Groot at the climax of Guardians of the Galaxy that it just made you tear up as he sacrificed himself to save his friends – the Guardians. This moment not only marked the hero’s journey for Groot but also ensured the coming together of the team – Starlord, Gamora, Drax and Rocket.
“I can lose again and again and again and again, forever and that makes you my prisoner”
This may seem like a generic line, but when you see it in context – Dr Strange saying it to Dormammu helped us fathom the sacrifice that that he was willing to make to save the world. Despite being an arrogant and selfish character in the beginning, in this one line we see the transformation of this person and his hero’s journey.
“In times of crisis, the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers”
While some dialogues capture the essence of a film through humour, some do the same with an inspirational line. The last MCU film, Black Panther (2018) does just that after which T’challa decides to open the gates of Wakanda to the outside world.
